This webinar hosted by Dr. Brian Novy, titled "Non-Fluoride Demin or Non-Fluoride Demon," focused on addressing fluoride hesitancy, the use of glass ionomer materials, and the potential of nano-hydroxyapatite in caries management. If you were unable to attend, here is a succinct overview along with key highlights.

Webinar Overview

As part of a four-part webinar series, Dr. Novy discussed the science behind remineralization and emphasized the importance of personalized patient care strategies. He also highlighted the need for effective caries risk assessments and motivational interviewing techniques to change patient behavior. The session covers the unique properties of glass ionomer as well as nano-hydroxyapatite for high-risk patients and stresses the significance of understanding patient perspectives to provide effective dental care. Aimed at expanding the dental community’s approach to caries management, Dr. Novy's insights provide a fresh perspective on utilizing cutting-edge materials and techniques to tackle tooth decay.

Key Highlights

  1. The Role of Nano Hydroxyapatite: Novy gave a detailed exploration into nano-hydroxyapatite, emphasizing its importance as a fluoride alternative. He discussed a paper on nano-hydroxyapatite in the Journal of Dental Research, “ In fact, in the papers on nano-hydroxyapatite, it talks about the fact that just hydroxyapatite alone exhibits poor mechanical properties. When compared with normal hydroxyapatite, the nano-hydroxyapatite has some exceptional properties like superior solubility, increased surface energy, and better biocompatibility.” highlighting its advantages in tooth remineralization.
  1. Engaging Fluoride-Hesitant or Fluoride-Resistant Patients: Novy provided insights into addressing the concerns of patients who are hesitant or resistant to fluoride use. He underscored the significance of education and transparent communication to explain why he recommends certain treatments and materials, such as glass ionomer. By explaining the benefits and reason for using certain products and providing options for alternatives, practitioners can ease hesitancy by discussing the specific advantages these materials offer in terms of bioactive properties and their role in oral health maintenance.
  1. Motivational Interviewing for Behavioral Change: A strong advocate for behavioral changes in caries management, Dr. Novy highlighted the power of motivational interviewing. He argued, “When you get them talking, we get them to a point where they start saying things like, ‘Actually, I should stop doing that,’” demonstrating the transformative effect of engaging patients in their oral health journey, “When the patient starts telling you they want to stop doing it, that's very different from you telling the patient you want them to stop doing it.”
